THE BACKGROUND

Ibrahim came to Chester through the Syrian Vulnerable Person’s Resettlement Scheme. He fled to Lebanon in 2013 and was living in poor conditions, with his wife and three children until he came to Chester late 2017.

THE PROBLEM

Ibrahim didn’t speak any English when he arrived, like the others who came through the system he was experiencing a real culture shock.

WHAT WE DID

Ibrahim started attending English classes at the Unity Centre twice a week. It was obvious from the start though that he was keen to engage in anything else that would keep him busy and active. When we started up the CommUnity Cafe and we needed volunteers to build furniture Ibrahim was one of the first to offer and provide support. Since then he has also put his hand to volunteering in the cafe and is our resident barista.

THE RESULTS

Ibrahim’s English has really improved, not only because of the classes but because of his general interaction through volunteering. His confidence has soared and he is now one of our best and most committed volunteers.
